A bicycle, sometimes called a push bike, cycle or just bike started showing up around the eighteen hundreds. Now
there are over a billion of them, almost twice as many as cars. Sometimes bicycles were and are still the only
transportation many people have, other than their two legs. As the number of bicycles grew, somehow they needed to
be protected from theft and the bicycle lock was invented.
Bike theft is extremely high in large cities all over the world. People now need to lock up their bikes so one
steals them. Bike thieves are getting smarter and smarter and can steal a bike in ten seconds. Cyclists need to
have the best and strongest lock they can afford. Bicycles today are very pricey and people do not want them
stolen. There are many brands of bicycle locks out there.
One brand of bicycle locks is the Kryptonite brand. It started in nineteen seventy two and has quite a
following. Supposedly the toughest and strongest lock there is the Kryptonite lock is worth the money. It
will stand by the name with an anti theft protection up to thirty seven thousand and fifty dollars.
A lot of bikes cost more than that. It comes with the lock, chain and a rating of twelve points. Prices start
around one hundred and fifty dollars, again depending on what kind is needed.
There are many bicycle thieves out there that will try and break the lock, just to say they can. It is pretty
indestructible. Once they found out the lock could be picked with a Bic pen, Kryptonite went back to the drawing
board to come up with a better and stronger lock. Good bicycle locks need to be strong and as thief proof as
possible.
Good bicycle locks can come with a combination lock. A sequence of numbers is used to open the lock; symbols may
be used as well. They are entered using a rotating dial which act together with several discs or cams. It can have
a mechanical keypad or and electronic one. Some people though might forget their combination and will have to have
the lock cut off. Not so anymore. There is a way to retrieve the combination.
Push up on the clamp on the bicycle locks, holding it in place, spin to the right until a clicking sound is
heard. Then move two numbers to the right. That will be the first number of the combination. Continuing to hold the
clamp up; spin to the left until it stops. That will be the second number. Then spin it again to the right, keeping
the clamp up. It will sound choppy but it should open on the third number.
The tried and true bicycle locks is probably the pad lock. It can be with a key or a combination lock or both.
There is a chain or cable that is long enough to go through the bike and around the bike rack. Some chains have a
plastic cover around it as not to mare the bike.
It is recommended to place the chain through the bike frame, one wheel and through the bike rack. And then pull
the chain and attach it to something that cannot be lifted and taken away. That has the ultimate safety and
hopefully the bike will not be stolen.
